Ketosis: Prepper Fitness Word of the Day

Fitness is a pet subject and project of mine. And I’ve been woefully slow to deliver on the heralded prepper fitness series. Sorry about that…


To make up for it, today I bring you a little secret about shedding excess body fat. It’s a method that relatively effortless as it only involves an adjusted diet. It’s called ketosis – forcing or tricking the body into metabolizing bot fat for energy.

What is it, exactly, and how does it work?


“Ketosis is a metabolic state in which your body uses fat, rather than sugar, for energy. Your body shifts into ketosis when your blood sugar is low, and the glycogen in your muscles has been depleted. Typically, this happens when you eat a low carb diet or fast from food altogether for a prolonged period. Ketosis is usually heralded as a fast and effective way to lose body fat. Research suggests that ketosis may positively affect health in other ways, as well.”


Normally the body gets energy from the sugars produced from eaten carbohydrates. The process works well until, like most Americans, you eat too much. The excess is stored as body fat.


If you dramatically cut the carbs – go “paleo” – then your body will burn its own sugar reserves. Then, when those are gone, it starts burning the fat. The fat turns into a type of sugar called ketones which serves as fuel. You get the energy and you start losing fat.


There are two ways to enter this state. First, you can simply fast – eat nothing. This is a little hard for most. The other, easier way is to limit carbs to less than 10% of the diet. Eat mostly fats and some protein. Group has the most exact details.


Carbs are found in breads, starch, pasta, beer, etc. Cut back on those dramatically and refined sugars.


You’ll know it’s working when you start getting a boost in energy and feeling better. There are also medical tests that will determine if/when the process kicks in.

The benefits go beyond energy and weight loss. Studies show it also helps neurological and spinal conditions, blood disorders, and cellular development.
