Deer season is in and I’ve never seen more specimen wandering about – literally everywhere. If you’re a hunter, you know what this means. If you a newbie or a game-minded prepper, then know that this is food insurance in case of SHTF.

The three items of focus are:

 

One. Anatomy

You need to know the animal inside and out. This means being able to remove organs – for cooking or to discard. It means the difference between, fat, bone, and muscle. And it involves the various cuts of meat – how they are harvested, cut, and later consumed. For just about any animal, one can find a chart or guide. Get looking.

 

Two. Quartering

With the deer, pig, whatever, skinned, it’s time to quarter it up. Cutting close to the bone and joints helps to avoid wasting meat. Again, there are guides aplenty on this subject. That, and practice will make for an efficient experience.

 

Three. Butchering

This is the all-important end step – slicing up the larger sections for storage or preparation. The number one goal is to avoid wasting meat. This can mean, depending on the animal and the cut, leaving meat on or off the bone. It’s again a matter of practice – and patience and personal preference.


The deer, hogs, birds, and other varmints of the world are a gift from God to preppers. Learn to make efficient use of that precious gift.

 

Please watch the butchering video associated with the original. There is plenty of better information on YouTube, Google, and at the bookstore about proper game processing. Look around and you’ll find some great information. Better sporting stores and gun outlets frequently carry such.

 

If push comes to shove, consult a veteran hunter or a butcher. Take advice and ask questions.

 

This is the difference between wasting food and getting it into the pot. It’s important anytime – but it will be critical if it’s the only way you get to eat. Important – any way you slice it.
