I just watched a video of the NYC bus station bomb going off. It was a big, smokey “poof” with very little damage – only the terrorist suffered true harm – he’ll be okay (sadly). Obviously, this Muslim Bangladeshi invader got something wrong in his homebrew. Keep that in mind when going over the following:

James Walton of Urban Survival Site has a short article about how to make your own gunpowder. This is, of course, presented (there and here) for all legal purposes only.

Let Muhammad’s failure serve as a warning: this stuff is only as good as you make it. Pay attention to the details.

Please see Walton’s original for the ingredients and mixing directions in detail.

Gunpowder is essentially saltpeter (stump remover), charcoal (powder), and sulfur (like the garden bug deterrent).

There are several ways to mix the ingredients. One is the old fashioned mill of marbles, a tumbler of sorts. A food-grade bender works as well. One can also us a mortar and pestle for decent results. The key, any method, is proper and thorough mixing.

Regardless of the amount mixed, use the following formula:

75% Saltpeter
15% Charcoal
10% Sulfur

The following tools and supplies are a must:

Gloves
Eye Protection
Breathing Mask
Glass Bowl or Container
Sifter or Colander
Wooden Spoon
Glass Jar

Safety is imperative. Be mindful that you’re making an explosive. Treat it as such.

Please review the eight steps at the original for proper results. During the process you must minimize sparks and any source of heat or flame.

There are many reasons to make gunpowder and uses for the stuff. You might want fireworks for New Year’s. Or, you might want supplies for SHTF. Keep in mind that others will also need gunpowder; knowing how to assemble it the right way will be a skill in demand.

Whatever your reason(s), just make sure you operate safely and, until such time as the law if moot, keep it all legal. Check with your local tax jurisdiction and obey all of their rules.

*One more time: this stuff is dangerous. If you’re not ready for the responsibility, then do not try this at home. Freedom Prepper presents this for educational purposes only with no warranty of safety or effectiveness. Mix at your own risk!
