Disasters, natural or human-made, have a history of leaving behind numerous problems that people find hard to cope with. One of those problems commonly is a food crisis.

There is a perpetual shortage of food to at least one strata of society, no matter what is going on in the world at that particular moment. Looking at the recent upheavals in food production, the shortage of labor, and farms that are failing and going through famines and problems of their own, the idea of food shortage or crisis starts to loom in your mind. 

So, the next question is, how would you know how and what to save while giving priority to the quality and quantity of food that you want to stock up? What you can do is make an inventory of what you already have in your house, then make a food storage plan that includes short and long-term food requirements.

Water Needs

One valuable resource you need to keep in mind is water. Note how much water you currently have and make space for more. Pre-packaged water bottles, empty containers, and even water filters can help in emergencies or critical situations. 

Water filters are needed because, often, the water may be untreated and contain all kinds of germs and bacteria, which can be super harmful to your health. Running the water through a water filter and then filling the water containers is the best way to eliminate harmful content.

Grow Your Food

Try growing a small garden in your yard space. If not, get some gardening pots and grow a garden inside your apartment. In there, you can plant essential fruits and vegetables that’ll save you in the long run. 

Doing this reduces your dependability on grocery stores or supermarkets and gives you an adequate supply of organic and homegrown fruits and vegetables for pennies. Also, you get the chance to pluck the produce yourself and try your hand at preserving them. 

Food Storage 

It would be best if you gave priority to stock up your food storage from day one. For that, you should decide among your family members their preferences for meals and food. After that, make a list of what you need to buy.

The best type of food to have on your list is canned food since it has a much longer shelf life than fresh food and is available in quantity at a moment’s notice. Be sure to buy nutritious items high in calories and carbs; prioritize nutrition over your tastebuds.

You should fill your pantry with baking items such as flour, wheat, sugar, salt, baking soda, baking sugar, spices, etc. 

Next on the priority list are food items such as cereals, ready-to-eat mixes, canned meats, soups, beans, fruits, and vegetables. These are good to buy because canned items last much longer than everyday food items. 

You can also include sweet food like candy bars and granola bars because, while they can act as a dessert, they also have many carbs in them and can provide you with a lot of energy.

Preservation of Food

Preservation of food is a skill you should not go without as it would pose the most beneficial skill during a food crisis. Well, that’s only if you possessed the skill before the crisis struck. By preserving your food, it goes without saying that you can prolong the life of many seasonal food items and enjoy them later. 

Go to supermarkets or stalls and buy large quantities of meats, fruits, vegetables, or anything you’d like with you during a food crisis. Go home, wash every food item you purchased, dry them carefully, cut them into small manageable pieces, pack them in zip lock bags or freezer-safe bags, and put them in the freezer. Learn how to freeze, dehydrate, and can food. It is effortless and can genuinely come in handy, food crisis or not.

Learn to Cook With Leftover Ingredients

There will often be leftover food at the end of the day that you cannot eat, even if you are on the verge of a food crisis. However, there is a wealth of possibilities in leftover food, from using it as the next day’s breakfast or lunch to serving it as a base for your next meal; for example, you can use the leftover vegetables and gravy to make a pasta dish the following day. It is easy and requires only a smidge of your creativity!

Store Leftover Food

As stated above, leftover food is essential, and if you do not want to eat it the next day, you can always store it. Freezing is an excellent way of minimizing unnecessary waste. 

Miscellaneous Items 

While food will remain the top priority in a food crisis, you should also focus on other emergency items that you may need. Things such as first aid kits, flashlights, batteries, waterproof matches, tape, blankets, a source of heating, and there are many more as you can imagine.

These items are as important as food because they will help you survive; it is always better to be prepared well in advance rather than run around in panic scrambling for items. 

Surviving a food crisis should not be that difficult, provided that you have planned or acted quickly ahead of struggle. Start small, buy one or two extra cans every week when out grocery shopping, and soon enough, you will have a growing amount of resources that will help tide you over the food crisis.

An electromagnetic pulse, or “EMP” for short, is a sudden burst of energy that overloads the fragile components within an electrical system, causing them all to short out. It causes actual hardware damage resulting in the failure of any unprotected electrical devices. Typically EMPs are generated by technically advanced devices such as nuclear weapons. 

The least realistic but most dangerous scenario that can take place is that someone detonates many EMPs over a nation, or crazier, the whole world and renders all the technology and electric grids everywhere useless. If this happens, you should know how to prepare for it to ensure your survival during this unprecedented attack.

Lighting 

Candles are the obvious choice in any scenario like this. We have them handy; they are cheap and readily available everywhere in quantity. The only few negative things one might mention are the strength of light the candles can provide, how unstable they can be depending on which type of candle you use, or how the wind can blow them out anytime.

Faraday Cage

A Faraday cage, named after its inventor, Michael Faraday, is a device or structure made and used to protect the cage’s contents from electrical impulses. It’s an excellent option for security, and easy to make. Nevertheless, an old microwave or a metal cage, i.e., a safe, can be as good.

The Faraday cage may do well against an EMP attack, but we can’t be too sure. We cannot foresee the impact of the electromagnetic pulse or the level of damage it might cause, so it is pretty much impossible to predict if the cage would protect the devices or not.

Communication Devices

Communications would be an arduous task after almost everything is rendered useless because of the EMP attack. It is always good to have many backup options to communicate with those important to you if a situation like this ever strikes. Devices such as a two-way radio, CB radio, or long-range walkie-talkie can be handy. If you find any of these devices in good shape after an EMP attack, put in some batteries and see if it works as there’s a high likelihood it will.

Communication is one of the more essential tasks after any disaster, and it is the very thing that you’d probably overlook. 

Backup Electricity

The primary issue after the attack is the question of electricity and how to source it if the grid becomes empty. Well, one option is to make electricity from solar panels by installing the panels around your home. Another is to set up wind turbine generators and produce electricity. 

Luckily, there are many backup electricity options, but they require preparation and hard work.

Defense

Any type of gun, be it shotgun or rifle, is useful for defending yourself. You can use these weapons to protect yourself and hunt animals, and depending on your preferences, for game. Another resourceful thing to do if you want alarm systems around your house would be to hang bells on the inside of your doors. Even if they seem like nothing, they are very consistent and can make you aware of intruders if they try to sneak in. Try to do this for every entry point in your house so you and your family can rest assured of your safety.

Sourcing Food

Sourcing food will be another significant problem if the restoration of power takes months or even years. Therefore you should know how to grow your food and manage your livestock. Books on farming and breeding livestock will help enormously with this, and there are countless out there.

Be Ready, So You Don’t Have To Get Ready

Many preppers already know how to live off the grid because they have started living that life to be ready if and when the time comes. All of this will eventually prepare you to survive an EMP attack if you go off the grid entirely and learn not to rely on anything that works with electricity.

Keeping a stock of first aid kits and bare medical essentials is also a requirement if anyone needs medical attention. The EMP attack is often called the ultimate doomsday attack that will eventually happen.
