It’s not a good prognosis. Cities can be great when things are great in general. Add in a disaster of semi-permanent proportion and one gets: mobs, crime, blackouts, starvation, and cannibalism. Bleak to say the least.

Jeremiah J. at Ready Nutrition knocked it out of the park with his article on what it will be like in a dense city when Doomsday comes. It’s something to think hard about now and not something one really wants to experience for real. Please read his original.

As I said, cities can be great many times. However, when the end comes, they can be (will be) death traps for millions. Please carefully read and think about Johnson’s scenario:

“After “The Day,” the city was almost completely without power.  You and your wife and two children were not able to leave town.  All mass transit was halted or discontinued.  It has been three days, and your family has been listening to static on the radio for the most part, with “campy” pre-recorded disaster broadcasts that have not been helpful or informative.  One of your neighbors left this morning after saying goodbye: he and his family had a boat, and they were heading out of the harbor, hoping to use one of the major rivers to make an escape.

They didn’t have room to take you or yours, but you wanted to stay put and not follow your neighbor’s idea: that there were plenty of boats whose owners were not going to use them…probably dead following the rioting and civil breakdown.  You’re beginning to think you should have listened to him.  Now you can hear angry voices outside, and you go to the window.  A mob has gathered at the top of your street!  They’re armed with rifles, bats, axes, machetes…and there are about 500 of them.  As you watch, they’re making a move toward the first house on the opposite side of the street.  Your house is less than half a block away.  There are no more cops, no more laws, no more order, and no help will be coming…on The Day After Doomsday.”

Yes. Sounds bad. And it will be. But it is not fiction. Look at a history book or around the news and you will soon find many examples of this playing out in reality – from ancient Rome to modern Detroit. In any time, the key to survival is planning and executing the plan when the time comes.

Oh, you have to act fast. This test will be timed.

Johnson looks into the planning areas that count:

Defense, personal and home.

Food and water. Always important.

Medical needs.

Group cohesion.

Then he puts together all the elements and predicts what it will take to fight, flee, or hunker your way out of this dreadful potential situation.

One thing to realize is that you will be on your own. No police protection; no rule of law. No public utilities. No food at the grocery store. No gas at the pump. Roads clogged. Public transport shut down.

Your plan must substitute for the lack of all these things and more. The best bet is to plan on leaving the hoards behind immediately. This means you need a strategy to get out of dodge and to have a place to relocate too.

In this plan you need to rule out trusting strangers – human nature has a funny way of acting … funny in emergency. You simply cannot count on most folks. Your best friends and your family must be the focus – people you can and should trust. And you must all be ready to work together.

Beyond planning, Johnson recommends actively practicing the escape. Make sure the bugs are worked out and that everyone knows their roles. And really have a concrete place to retreat to. You don’t want to show up in the countryside unannounced as you (you) will be viewed as the looters and invaders. Not good.

Plan today, survive tomorrow.

*Jeremiah Johnson is the Nom de plume of a retired Green Beret of the United States Army Special Forces (Airborne). Mr. Johnson was a Special Forces Medic, EMT and ACLS-certified, with comprehensive training in wilderness survival, rescue, and patient-extraction. He is a Certified Master Herbalist and a graduate of the Global College of Natural Medicine of Santa Ana, CA. A graduate of the U.S. Army’s survival course of SERE school (Survival Evasion Resistance Escape), Mr. Johnson also successfully completed the Montana Master Food

A few miles may make all the difference for survival. Lower density leads to less interaction with the worst elements. Those in the country will have the advantage. Yet, even if you must live in or near a city, there is still hope. Said hope comes from waking up fast and getting out ahead of the collapse of civilization. Riding it out is an option too – if you’re ready.

Having somewhere in mind to flee to is kind of important. Some things to plan on. Get with it.

Get Your Game On! Wild Game Butchering and Cooking

Get Your Game On! Wild Game Butchering and Cooking

Well, this one is slightly out of season in the Northern Hemisphere. We don’t start the hunts for a few more months. But, if your in New Zealand, I think Red Stag season opens any day, right? Anyway, today we discuss and present a subject that more preppers and survivalists need to know about if they don’t already. Veteran hunters may stop here and now.

This one is all about cleaning, preparing, and cooking wild game! Bill White at Survivopedia kindly wrote up an extensive guide to game prep. And I mean extensive with a capital “E.” Make sure to read through the original at least once. Save it for when hunting season comes around.

Here’s a quick look at some of what is included:

Picture by White/Shutterstock.

So, this article really isn’t about hunting nor “pure” prepping. It’s about food security. Rural folks will still tell you that hunting and trapping (and fishing) still go a long way toward putting meat on the table. That’s important, especially if you find yourself in a survival situation. Read on:

“Within the prepping community, we see this manifest in how people deal with their need for food. At the beginning, we all start out with building a food stockpile. But as time goes on, we tend to start looking at various ways of supplementing that stockpile, such as raising our own food, foraging for edible plants and hunting.

For those of us who are hunters, it makes sense to hunt for food. But what about those who are not? Granted, anyone who can shoot a rifle accurately can kill an animal, assuming they can find one to kill. That’s the hard part of hunting and the one that will give most post-apocalyptical hunters the most trouble.

The other thing you’re going to have to know how to do is turn that dead animal into usable meat, once you kill it. Killing an animal is one thing, butchering it is another thing entirely. If you don’t do that correctly, the meat could be tainted and dangerous to eat.”

-White

Follow along with White as he discusses:

Hunting background;

Cleanliness;

(He assumes you’ve already brought down the animal);

Cleaning (Gutting and Skinning);

Necessary knives and tools;

Cutting procedures; this gets tricky, “icky” even, read and operate carefully. Perrin will add: watch the bladder and lower GI tract … yeah;

Blood disposition (get used to it);

All about birds (don’t run afoul…);

Skinning techniques;

Butchering (great chart! and more are available online);

Cooking in the Wild (like on the bug out trail);

Smoking (the meat but a cigar);

Jerking (not a Steve Martin movie);

He also includes a video, downloads, and more tips than one can almost keep up with. Many thanks to Bill White*.

*Bill White is the author of Conquering the Coming Collapse, and a former Army officer, manufacturing engineer and business manager. More recently, he left the business world to work as a cross-cultural missionary on the Mexico border. Bill has been a survivalist since the 1970s, when the nation was in the latter days of the Cold War. He had determined to head into the Colorado Rockies, should Washington ever decide to push the button. While those days have passed, the knowledge Bill gained during that time hasn’t. He now works to educate others on the risks that exist in our society and how to prepare to meet them.

Again, you may not need this information for a few months. But, if you get serious about hunting and/or survivalism, then you will need it.
