Maps to Track the August 21st Solar Eclipse

Maps to Track the August 21st Solar Eclipse

Monday, August 21st will usher in the first full eclipse of the sun (across North America) in decades. Millions are expected to watch the event across the country.

This is something we’ll probably enjoy, merely as a spectacle of nature. I noted a few days ago that some states are preparing to treat the eclipse hysteria like a natural disaster. If you do your viewing around large groups of people – just remember it’s large groups of people.

Otherwise, have fun with the show. The actual viewing band for the total eclipse is rather narrow. However, it seems that the majority of the USA will be treated to 70 – 99% of the full cover-up. That’s still pretty cool.

NASA kindly put together a viewing guide of sorts. This includes facts and maps with approximate (and seemingly very accurate) areas and times. Please take a good look around.

“This unique map shows the path of the moon’s umbral shadow – in which the sun will be completely obscured by the moon – during the total solar eclipse of Aug. 21, 2017, as well as the fraction of the sun’s area covered by the moon outside the path of totality. The lunar shadow enters the United States near Lincoln City, Oregon, at 9:05 a.m. PDT. Totality begins in the United States in Lincoln City, Oregon, at 10:16 a.m. PDT. The total eclipse will end in Charleston, South Carolina, at 2:48 p.m. EDT. The lunar shadow leaves the United States at 4:09 p.m. EDT. A partial eclipse will be visible throughout the United States.”

On this picture one can see the approximate times the event will be best viewed in the general area. Please click on the much larger maps on NASA’s site. This way you can plan your best observation.

Be mindful the 100% zone is pretty narrow. Use the maps to extrapolate when and where you’ll have your best chances. Not everyone will be treated to the full eclipse, but most should definitely see some part of it.

In addition to the concerns about the “disaster” impact, at least one voice in concern of another sort: Anne Graham Lotz, Billy Graham’s daughter, sees the eclipse as a warning from God. That may well be true even if we cannot discern what He’s warning us about.

Americans face just about every problem conceivable. Another warning about them would make sense. I don’t think the event itself qualifies as a disaster – far from it. Our people may react poorly (as they frequently do) and that might cause troubles.

Still, I would advise cautious optimism next Monday. Take advantage of the astrological phenomenon. Use it as an example to teach the children about interplanetary movements. Use those maps from NASA for the best viewing. Just take care on the road or around crowds as you ordinarily would.

As a complete aside: some few of you may recognize the Tolkienian “cause” behind the celestial overlap. There: you get science, religion, prepping AND literature. Enjoy it.

Get Your Game On! Wild Game Butchering and Cooking

Get Your Game On! Wild Game Butchering and Cooking

Well, this one is slightly out of season in the Northern Hemisphere. We don’t start the hunts for a few more months. But, if your in New Zealand, I think Red Stag season opens any day, right? Anyway, today we discuss and present a subject that more preppers and survivalists need to know about if they don’t already. Veteran hunters may stop here and now.

This one is all about cleaning, preparing, and cooking wild game! Bill White at Survivopedia kindly wrote up an extensive guide to game prep. And I mean extensive with a capital “E.” Make sure to read through the original at least once. Save it for when hunting season comes around.

Here’s a quick look at some of what is included:

So, this article really isn’t about hunting nor “pure” prepping. It’s about food security. Rural folks will still tell you that hunting and trapping (and fishing) still go a long way toward putting meat on the table. That’s important, especially if you find yourself in a survival situation. Read on:

“Within the prepping community, we see this manifest in how people deal with their need for food. At the beginning, we all start out with building a food stockpile. But as time goes on, we tend to start looking at various ways of supplementing that stockpile, such as raising our own food, foraging for edible plants and hunting.

For those of us who are hunters, it makes sense to hunt for food. But what about those who are not? Granted, anyone who can shoot a rifle accurately can kill an animal, assuming they can find one to kill. That’s the hard part of hunting and the one that will give most post-apocalyptical hunters the most trouble.

The other thing you’re going to have to know how to do is turn that dead animal into usable meat, once you kill it. Killing an animal is one thing, butchering it is another thing entirely. If you don’t do that correctly, the meat could be tainted and dangerous to eat.”

-White

Follow along with White as he discusses:

Hunting background;

Cleanliness;

(He assumes you’ve already brought down the animal);

Cleaning (Gutting and Skinning);

Necessary knives and tools;

Cutting procedures; this gets tricky, “icky” even, read and operate carefully. Perrin will add: watch the bladder and lower GI tract … yeah;

Blood disposition (get used to it);

All about birds (don’t run afoul…);

Skinning techniques;

Butchering (great chart! and more are available online);

Cooking in the Wild (like on the bug out trail);

Smoking (the meat but a cigar);

Jerking (not a Steve Martin movie);

He also includes a video, downloads, and more tips than one can almost keep up with. Many thanks to Bill White*.

*Bill White is the author of Conquering the Coming Collapse, and a former Army officer, manufacturing engineer and business manager. More recently, he left the business world to work as a cross-cultural missionary on the Mexico border. Bill has been a survivalist since the 1970s, when the nation was in the latter days of the Cold War. He had determined to head into the Colorado Rockies, should Washington ever decide to push the button. While those days have passed, the knowledge Bill gained during that time hasn’t. He now works to educate others on the risks that exist in our society and how to prepare to meet them.

Again, you may not need this information for a few months. But, if you get serious about hunting and/or survivalism, then you will need it.
