Pemmican Super Food Made Easy
Ever been to the ocean and felt sorry for the hungry pelicans? Well, if so, then here’s a great… Wait, I’m sorry. This is PEMMICAN. Not “pelican.” Geesh…
One’s a bird known for nosing around docks and the other is a super survival food. Which would you rather have in an emergency? Yes, I know – you can eat a pelican. But that requires extra work. With Pemmican, you do the work first and then you can enjoy the high-energy snacks later. Five years later with proper storage!
Once again, it’s City Prepping to the rescue. In a moment, watch their easy how-to video on making your own Pemmican. Here’s a short review:
Cooking With CP
Ingredients
Three to five pounds of lean beef!
2 cups of dehydrated berries.
Salt.
Water.
Tallow.
Equipment
Dehydrator -or-
An oven. (Make sure it has a low setting).
Food processor.
Pots, pans, utensils, wax paper, and other kitchenish items (that you already have).
BEEF! The other, other red meat!
- CAN IT!
You knew they’d find a way to work in camp cooking, didn’t you?
And, yes, Pemmican can be canned. And, if done correctly, it may (may) last longer than five years. Five years is a long time for a foodstuff. But, it is possible, under the right conditions, to make this stuff last for a solid century. In my case, that’s laughably far out, but you get the idea.
The Finished Product
What you end up with is a cross between beef jerky and a granola bar. It’s high-energy from the berries and high-protein from the beef. It all adds up to high mileage on the bug-out trail. Plus, the taste is better than k-rations or similar commercial foods.
Now, you may have noticed that I skipped a few steps – like using the equipment to blend and process the ingredient! This is, remember, a short review, something to grab the attention. (I think the beef picture was sufficient on that count). Now, either get a notepad or set the laptop up in the kitchen. It’s time to watch the show and start cooking! (Uh, wash your hands first).
