Currency Devaluation Highlights Continuing Collapse in Venezuela
Here at Freedom Prepper and throughout the prepperverse, we continually speculate about calamity. Generally these are “what if” scenarios or history lessons. Some call them scare tactics. But they are, or can be, real.
In addition to natural disasters, we discuss: economic collapse; martial law; civil unrest and riots; famine; war; crime; food shortages; inflation; unemployment; and political corruption. We call these SHTF events for a reason.
Believe it or not, every single one of the above disasters is unfolding right now. They are all happening at a nightmare pace in Venezuela.
This modern, nearly complete first world country in South America was nominally birthed by the great Simon Bolivar 200 years ago. Just a few short years ago it stood ready to enter the top tier of nations – modern, civilized, and prosperous (with more than a few beautiful women and decent tobacco plants [pardon the Perrin-isms, please]).
Today, Venezuela is in utter ruin and chaos. This has been happening for the past two years and it gets worse by the week.
Odds are you do not live in Venezuela. You’ve probably never been there; I have not either. You may not even be sure where it is. In short, the terrible problems in that country are foreign; they do not directly affect you or I.
Those problems are, however, a learning opportunity for and a warning to all of us.
Through the horrible lense of Venezuela we are witnessing the complete collapse of an entire society. This was brought about by many factors – chief among them Communism (Socialism). And it can all happen anywhere to any people – even Americans. Please learn and prepare.
I’ve written some shorts and posted some links about the crisis this year. Some few of these have proven extremely popular. If I have time, I would like to write out some fully timeline of the collapse with detailed analysis. (No promise on that).
Here are but a few of the problems citizens are facing in the stricken nation:
Price and monetary inflation;
Starvation – the average person has lost nearly 20 pounds already (some have died, more will);
People are eating rats and pets to survive;
The grocery stores are empty and closing;
Daily riots and ultraviolent crime;
Schools are closed;
Power is out;
Water is interrupted; and
On and on and on…
Please read this article from Yahoo News, today, about the latest troubles: currency devaluation.
The corrupt government is planning to make changes to the Constitution. That means they are planning institutional dictatorship. That, they already have; they’re just trying to make it “legal.”
In advance of their plans, they have just sold off a round of currency. This is a move of utter desperation, designed to raise a little money for the schemes and to keep international bankers happy. It won’t work. It never does.
It has cut the value of the Venezuelan dollar by 64%. The value has been falling already and will continue to plummet. This means inflation, possibly even hyper inflation for the people. That means that the people, who already struggle to find money, will be paying more for the already scarce things they need to survive.
All of this is going to get worse before it gets better – if it gets better.
Two final thoughts:
One, 90+% of Venezuelans are Christians. They are our Western(ish) brothers and sisters. They are starving and dying and living in hell. We owe them our sympathy and our prayers.
Second, we owe it to ourselves to take a serious note of what is happening. And we must safeguard against that here in this country.
America has all of the aforementioned problems to slightly lesser degrees. It will only take a slight change here or there to catapult us from troubled to chaotic. There is little we can do to stop that from happening. There are no legal or political solutions at this point.
We can, however, prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. We must do that.
