Teacher of the Year Writes Bravely About the Culture of Violence

The recent high school shooting in Florida once again has the nation asking questions about school safety and violence in schools. And from so many sources, we are getting the same old, tired answers. The media cannot stop concentrating on the gun involved and guns in general. “Common sense” gun control, they parrot, without any other outside thought or consideration.

Now, however, we have a new voice in the debate. I found this story originally at The Organic Prepper site, thanks to Daisy Luther. It’s about a letter, a plea from Kelly Guthrie Raley of Florida.

Mrs. Raley is a 20-year teaching veteran and a 2017-2018 teacher of the year. It’s interesting and informative the perspective she takes as a professional on this charged topic. You can learn a little more via this Fox News story.

From Mrs. Raley’s Facebook posting (800,000+ likes, 640,000+ shares):

“Okay, I’ll be the bad guy and say what no one else is brave enough to say, but wants to say. I’ll take all the criticism and attacks from everyone because you know what? I’m a TEACHER. I live this life daily. And I wouldn’t do anything else! But I also know daily I could end up in an active shooter situation.

Until we, as a country, are willing to get serious and talk about mental health issues, lack of available care for the mental health issues, lack of discipline in the home, horrendous lack of parental support when the schools are trying to control horrible behavior at school (oh no! Not MY KID. What did YOU do to cause my kid to react that way?), lack of moral values, and yes, I’ll say it-violent video games that take away all sensitivity to ANY compassion for others’ lives, as well as reality TV that makes it commonplace for people to constantly scream up in each others’ faces and not value any other person but themselves, we will have a gun problem in school. Our kids don’t understand the permanency of death anymore!!!

I grew up with guns. Everyone knows that. But you know what? My parents NEVER supported any bad behavior from me. I was terrified of doing something bad at school, as I would have not had a life until I corrected the problem and straightened my ass out. My parents invaded my life. They knew where I was ALL the time. They made me have a curfew. They made me wake them up when I got home. They made me respect their rules. They had full control of their house, and at any time could and would go through every inch of my bedroom, backpack, pockets, anything! Parents: it’s time to STEP UP! Be the parent that actually gives a crap! Be the annoying mom that pries and knows what your kid is doing. STOP being their friend. They have enough “friends” at school. Be their parent. Being the “cool mom” means not a damn thing when either your kid is dead or your kid kills other people because they were allowed to have their space and privacy in YOUR HOME. I’ll say it again. My home was filled with guns growing up. For God’s sake, my daddy was an 82nd Airborne Ranger who lost half his face serving our country. But you know what? I never dreamed of shooting anyone with his guns. I never dreamed of taking one! I was taught respect for human life, compassion, rules, common decency, and most of all, I was taught that until I moved out, my life and bedroom wasn’t mine…it was theirs. And they were going to know what was happening because they loved me and wanted the best for me.

There. Say that I’m a horrible person. I didn’t bring up gun control, and I will refuse to debate it with anyone. This post wasn’t about gun control. This was me, loving the crap out of people and wanting the best for them. This was about my school babies and knowing that God created each one for greatness, and just wanting them to reach their futures. It’s about 20 years ago this year I started my teaching career. Violence was not this bad 20 years ago. Lack of compassion wasn’t this bad 20 years ago. And God knows 20 years ago that I wasn’t afraid daily to call a parent because I KNEW that 9 out of 10 would cuss me out, tell me to go to Hell, call the news on me, call the school board on me, or post all over FaceBook about me because I called to let them know what their child chose to do at school…because they are a NORMAL kid!!!!!

Those 17 lives mattered. When are we going to take our own responsibility seriously?“

Daisy Luther asked, “What do you think?” For the record, she agrees with Raley. So do I.

What do I think? I think she is neither a “bad guy” nor a “horrible person” – quite the opposite. She’s a truth-teller. This case, even involving guns, is not about guns. Gun control isn’t the answer as guns are not the question.

As to what’s really wrong with our society, she nails it – the society is the problem – from top to bottom it is empty, nihilistic, violent, immoral, and stupid. Evil is celebrated while traditional values are held in contempt. What really do we expect in return?

And she’s right about the mental health aspect too. Real problems go unaddressed until it’s too late. Fake problems like “boys being boys” are treated in ridiculous fashion and often turn into real problems. Why are ALL school shooters doped up on psychotropic meds? Why does the media overlook that? Do any politicians care?

As for Raley’s final question, about when will we own responsibility? I think for larger American culture and society it may already be too late. For preppers and homeschoolers, on the other hand, there may still be time. But, if so, then it is strictly up to us. We need to continue to divorce ourselves from this insane and toxic culture. And we should thank and celebrate brave truth tellers like Raley. Please spread the word. Your thoughts?

Get Your Game On! Wild Game Butchering and Cooking

Get Your Game On! Wild Game Butchering and Cooking

Well, this one is slightly out of season in the Northern Hemisphere. We don’t start the hunts for a few more months. But, if your in New Zealand, I think Red Stag season opens any day, right? Anyway, today we discuss and present a subject that more preppers and survivalists need to know about if they don’t already. Veteran hunters may stop here and now.

This one is all about cleaning, preparing, and cooking wild game! Bill White at Survivopedia kindly wrote up an extensive guide to game prep. And I mean extensive with a capital “E.” Make sure to read through the original at least once. Save it for when hunting season comes around.

Here’s a quick look at some of what is included:

Picture by White/Shutterstock.

So, this article really isn’t about hunting nor “pure” prepping. It’s about food security. Rural folks will still tell you that hunting and trapping (and fishing) still go a long way toward putting meat on the table. That’s important, especially if you find yourself in a survival situation. Read on:

“Within the prepping community, we see this manifest in how people deal with their need for food. At the beginning, we all start out with building a food stockpile. But as time goes on, we tend to start looking at various ways of supplementing that stockpile, such as raising our own food, foraging for edible plants and hunting.

For those of us who are hunters, it makes sense to hunt for food. But what about those who are not? Granted, anyone who can shoot a rifle accurately can kill an animal, assuming they can find one to kill. That’s the hard part of hunting and the one that will give most post-apocalyptical hunters the most trouble.

The other thing you’re going to have to know how to do is turn that dead animal into usable meat, once you kill it. Killing an animal is one thing, butchering it is another thing entirely. If you don’t do that correctly, the meat could be tainted and dangerous to eat.”

-White

Follow along with White as he discusses:

Hunting background;

Cleanliness;

(He assumes you’ve already brought down the animal);

Cleaning (Gutting and Skinning);

Necessary knives and tools;

Cutting procedures; this gets tricky, “icky” even, read and operate carefully. Perrin will add: watch the bladder and lower GI tract … yeah;

Blood disposition (get used to it);

All about birds (don’t run afoul…);

Skinning techniques;

Butchering (great chart! and more are available online);

Cooking in the Wild (like on the bug out trail);

Smoking (the meat but a cigar);

Jerking (not a Steve Martin movie);

He also includes a video, downloads, and more tips than one can almost keep up with. Many thanks to Bill White*.

*Bill White is the author of Conquering the Coming Collapse, and a former Army officer, manufacturing engineer and business manager. More recently, he left the business world to work as a cross-cultural missionary on the Mexico border. Bill has been a survivalist since the 1970s, when the nation was in the latter days of the Cold War. He had determined to head into the Colorado Rockies, should Washington ever decide to push the button. While those days have passed, the knowledge Bill gained during that time hasn’t. He now works to educate others on the risks that exist in our society and how to prepare to meet them.

Again, you may not need this information for a few months. But, if you get serious about hunting and/or survivalism, then you will need it.
